▲ 이스라엘-하마스 전쟁에 관한 IWPG 성명

㈔세계여성평화그룹(IWPG: International Women’s Peace Group)이 이스라엘과 팔레스타인 무장 단체 하마스 간 전쟁을 즉각 중단할 것을 촉구했다.

IWPG는 26일‘이스라엘-하마스 전쟁에 관한 IWPG 성명’이라는 제목의 성명을 내고 “전 세계 안보를 위협하고 무고한 희생을 낳는 이스라엘-하마스 전쟁을 즉각 중단하고 양측이 평화 협의에 이르러야 한다”고 요구했다.

이 단체는 “전쟁과는 관련 없는 민간인들을 볼모 삼아 각자의 입장을 주장하는 행위는 어떠한 이유로도 정당화될 수 없다”며 “전쟁의 최대 희생자는 여성, 청년, 어린이다. 전쟁을 멈추지 않으면 수천수만의 국민이 전쟁 사상자로 남을 것이고 그 참담한 절망을 아무도 보상할 수 없을 것”이라고 우려했다.

이어 “전쟁이 지속될수록 보복이 또 다른 보복을 부르는 악순환으로 양측이 평화 협상을 이룰 기회는 점차 사라지고 목적 없는 복수극만 반복될 뿐”이라며 “무의미한 무력 행위를 즉각 중단해야 한다”고 거듭 강조했다. 

국제사회의 평화 공조도 요청했다. UN 경제사회이사회(ECOSOC) 및 공보국(DGC)에 등록된 IWPG는 “UN 및 국제사회는 양측이 대화에 임할 수 있도록 평화 중재와 인도주의적 지원 등 필요한 조치를 조속히 취해달라”고 요청했다. 

그러면서 “세계평화를 저해하는 전쟁범죄와 무력 행위를 강력하게 규탄하며 전 세계 여성들과 함께 평화 구축을 위한 모든 노력에 지원을 아끼지 않을 것”이라고 밝혔다.

한편 이스라엘-하마스 전쟁은 지난 7일 하마스가 이스라엘을 상대로 대규모 침공 공격을 감행하며 시작됐다. 2014년 7월 가자 지구 분쟁 이후 9년 만에 발발한 이스라엘-하마스 간의 전면전이다. 1973년 제4차 중동전쟁 이후 역대 최대 규모의 충돌로서 전쟁 초기 사망자의 수가 4차 중동전쟁의 사망자를 넘어서는 대규모전쟁이다.

IWPG urges for a ceasefire in Israel-Hamas

The International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG) urged for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

On Oct 26, IWPG issued a statement called “IWPG Statement on Israel-Hamas War” and said, “The International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG) strongly urges for an immediate end to the ongoing armed conflict between Israel and Hamas and for a peace agreement.”

IWPG pointed out that “No cause can morally justify the act of holding innocent civilians as hostage.Women, youth, and children are disproportionately affected by the ravages of war, and should this conflict persist, the toll on casualties is projected to reach tens of millions. The repercussions of such atrocity and devastation are immeasurable, and no reparations can adequately compensate for the human cost.”

IWPG also emphasized, “In recognition of the potential for a detrimental cycle of retaliation and counterretaliation, IWPG urges both parties to swiftly halt hostilities and engage in constructive dialogue for peace. Failure to do so jeopardizes the opportunity for a peaceful resolution, leading to a meaningless cycle of revenge.”

IWPG also called upon the international community to help. IWPG, a non-governmental organization in consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and registered under the Department of Global Communications (DGC) appealed to the international community, including the UN, to “take immediate and appropriate measures, including the provision of humanitarian aid and active mediation to facilitate peaceful negotiations between the conflicting parties.”

IWPG added, “IWPG denounces all sorts of war crimes and acts of violence that disrupt world peace and is deeply dedicated to achieving world peace with women all around the world.”

The Israel-Hamas War started with Hamas launching an extensive attack on Israel on Oct 7. This was the first all-out war between Israel and Hamas in 9 years since the conflict in Gaza in 2014. This is biggest clash since the 4th the Middle East War in 2014, initial casualties mounting up to more than that of the 4th Middle East War.
